According to his Baptism record, Christian (Chris) was the tenth child and the seventh son of Franz and Maria Katharina (Kreissler) Gernandt of Marienhagen, Hesse, Germany. (Franz was a bricklayer.) Chris was baptized on Dec. 26, 1862, at the Lutheran Church in Marienhagen and confirmed there on April 23, 1876. His godparents were Karl Bauch, miner of Marienhagen, and Catherine Spitze, the daughter of the late blacksmith Friedrich Spitze of Marienhagen.

Chris arrived in New York on Jan. 8, 1879, a month and a day after his sixteenth birthday, on the SS Donau, which had sailed from Bremen, Germany.

Chris then traveled to Benton County, Missouri, where his sister Catharina Gernandt Hesse (memorial no. 37133113) was living. Their brother Wilhelm Gernand (memorial no. 39138398) was also living in Benton County at the time of the 1880 census. Chris farmed in Missouri most of the rest of his life.

Chris married Dora Kunolt on March 11, 1886, at Zion Lutheran Church, Lincoln, Missouri. They were blessed with nine children, six of whom lived to adulthood.

Chris was especially close to his grandson Otto (son of Theodore), with whom he is pictured.
