Herman Thompson, 60, of rural Marshall, died at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 1998 at the Rush Presbyterian St. Lukes Medical Center in Chicago.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 28 at the West Union Christian Church in West Union with the Rev. Tom Cooperider and the Rev. Robert Thompson officiating. Burial was in the Ohio Cemetery, northwest of West Union. Serving as pallbearers are: Curtis Thompson, Tim Thompson, Chad Thompson, Steven Birchfield, Terry Birchfield, and Brad Thompson. A visitation service was held after 3 p.m. on Friday, November 27 at the West Union Christian Church. Prust-Hosch Funeral Chapel in West Union was in charge of the arrangements.

Herman Thompson was born December 9, 1937 in Anderson Township, Clark County, the son of Ray Thompson and Edna Romoser Thompson. He married Rosemary Higginbotham on June 4, I960 in Marshall.

Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Thompson; his mother, Edna Thompson of Marshall; three sons, Tim Thompson, and his wife, Sarah Thompson, Curtis Thompson and Chad Thompson, all of Marshall; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jackie and Terry Birchfield and Angela and Brad Thompson, all of Marshall: seven brothers and their spouses, William and Joan Thompson of Hopedale, Ill., Glen Dale and Wanda Thompson of Queensland, Australia, Richard and Esther Thompson of Watson, Ill., Robert and Carol Thompson of Louisville, Ill., Warren and Diane Thompson of Rockville, Ind.,|Melvin and Jane Thompson of Marshall, and Edward and Mary Lee Thompson of Savoy, Ill.; four sisters and their spouses, Marcella and Ronnie Scott of Thorton, Colo., Janet and Pete Hetherington of Danville, Ill., Charlotte and Tom Brown of Marshall, and Wanda and Rick Pine of Marshall; seven grandchildren, Steven Birchfield, Dustin Birchfield, Shelby Thompson, Aaron Thompson, Chelsea Hollingsworth. Layne Thompson, and Tyler Thompson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Thompson on February 25, 1994; one son, Brent Eugene Thompson on February 25, 1990, and a brother Harold Dean Thompson in 1974.

Herman Thompson was a owner/operator of Herman's Body Shop in Marshall for over ten years and also had farmed since 1961 until illness caused his retirement.

He was a devoted member of the West Union Christian Church having served as elder and deacon for a number of years, and as his family stated, "the Church was his life." He was also a charter member of the West Union Ruritan Club, having served as club president several times, and was the current vice-president.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the West Union Christian Church special building fund to assist with the construction of the new entrance and handicapped access.
