Otto was the son of Dr. Johann Carl Friedrich Gildemeister, Jr., (1779-1849) and Verena Tibeta Stolz (1795-1841). He was a German journalist, essayist, translator, author and mayor of Bremen.
As a translator, Otto completed the sonnets of Shakespeare, plus twelve of his plays, in addition to "Orlando Furioso", and Dante.
He had a bark named for him, and a bust was created of him by sculptor Georg Roemer (1868-1922).
His wife Emma Marie Felicie Meyer was born in Tampico, Mexico, and died in Bremen in 1920.
Otto's youngest sister, Maria CHristina Verena Gildemeister (1840-1914) was married to Hermann Georg Rodewald (1815-1891) in Bremen in 1861.
His brother was the architect Karl or Charles Gildemeister (1820-1869) who was the co-creator of New York City's Crystal Palace.
