Larry attended District 1 country school and Alliance High School. He joined the United States Army in March, 1962. Most of his tour of duty was in Germany.
On March 14, 1965, he married Sharon Kay (Mann) Schnell. They were blessed with three children. He farmed and ranched south of Alliance.
After his wife Sharon's death he continued farming, ranching, and raising his children. In 1996 Larry met a new love and companion Shirley Rief.
Larry retired in 2009 due to vascular dementia and Factor 5 Leiden blood disorder.
Larry was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was president of District 124 School Board for several years. He received The Outstanding Young Farmer Award in recognition of exceptional progress in agriculture and contributions to the community, and The Outstanding Young Farmer and Rancher Award in recognition of his accomplishments in agriculture and leadership in his community and as one of the state's most progressive agricultural producers.
Larry is survived by: children, Amanda (Mandi) and Steve Kildow of Bayard, Melinda (Mindi) and Wade Foster of Hemingford, and Lanny Schnell of Alliance, his sweetheart, Shirley Rief, grandchildren, Alex, Alanda, and Conrad Kildow, Dani, Keelie, and Korby Campbell, and Leyton Schnell. brothers and sisters Violet (Don) Colson, Harvey (Beverly) Schnell, Roger (Dorothy) Schnell, Connie (Jim) Engelhaupt, all of Alliance. Mardella (George) McFall of Lakeside, Rosemary (Dave) Woods of Manhattan, Kansas, and a host of relatives and friends.
Larry was preceded in death by: wife Sharon Schnell, parents Conrad and Rosalie Schnell, infant sister Lois and half-brother Marvin.
Larry enjoyed flying airplanes, fishing, boating, traveling, driving around crop checking, going to farm sales and visiting. But most of all he will be remembered for his great sense of humor. He was a man who worked hard and played hard.
Burial was in the Alliance Cemetery, Alliance, Ne. with military graveside rites.
