S/O John Young and first wife, Jean Blair.

John Blair Young came from Glasgow, Scotland and arrived in Castle Garden, New York City on Apr 27, 1868 on the S.S. Iowa as an iron turner. He married Pauline Werner, d/o Daniel Werner and Caroline Wilhelmine Zierke, on Jan 13, 1883 in San Francisco, CA.

They had three children, the first two born in San Francisco and the last born in Oakland: William B. (1883-1945), shipyard laborer and hotel clerk in Berkeley and Oakland, Pauline (1885-1965), Treasurer and Tax Collector for the City of Berkeley, and John (1888-1986), railroad telegrapher in Portland, OR, then Los Angeles as a railroad clerk, marrying Gladys Johnson in Portland or Los Angeles between 1917 and 1920, then moving to Queens, NY and White Plains, NY where he died.

A few of John's siblings are mentioned in the obituary of his brother Henry H. Young:
The Oakland Tribune, January 28, 1908
YOUNG--In Oakland, January 26 1908, Henry H. Young, brother of John B., James, Colin, Jennie and Mary Young and Mrs. Annie McChesney, a native of Scotland, aged 49 years and 9 months.

On September 2, 1890, and then again on August 5, 1891, while living in Oakland, Pauline filed for divorce, but apparently changed her mind. The reason for the divorce filings can best be summed up by a statement of Polly’s cousin Dorothy Arzner in her autobiography, who “described her aunt as long-suffering. Her aunt had to deal with an alcoholic husband and his abuse. He even ran off once with all their savings and left his wife all alone with four [sic] little children. He had gone to Scotland for a ‘fling,’ and he eventually came back. Her aunt put up with it all, and eventually died from an operation.”

When John arrived in Castle Garden, New York on Apr 27, 1868, he listed his occupation as "iron turner." In 1885, he was a blacksmith and shipsmith in San Francisco. In 1886 and 1900, he was a blacksmith in Oakland. On Apr 21, 1910, he was a blacksmith in Vallejo. In 1910 he went to Glasgow to bring his brother Colin Campbell Blair, to America. Leaving Liverpool, England on Oct 29, 1910, John B. Young arrived on the S.S. Mauretania with his brother Colin C. Young at Ellis Island on Nov 10th: John B. Young, 61, blacksmith, last permanent residence was Vallejo, California, final destination is Vallejo, California. Colin C. Young, 54, laborer, last permanent residence was Glasgow, Scotland, final destination is Vallejo, California. In 1920 John, a widower living with his brother, James and Elizabeth, his wife, was a blacksmith in a Navy yard in Oakland. Colin did not appear in the 1920 census.
