Joseph was born Aug. 25, 1923, in Upper Sandusky, to Charles and Mary (Minnegan) Ritzler. He married Vivian Holman Aug. 1, 1942, at St. Wendelin Catholic Church, Fostoria, and she survives.
Joseph is survived by his eight children, David (Fran) Ritzler of Findlay, Susan Logsdon of Cocoa Beach, Fla., and Robert (Linda) Ritzler, Kenneth (Sue) Ritzler, Larry (Karen) Ritzler, Chuck (Beth) Ritzler, Janice (Mark) Kontak and Thomas Ritzler, all of Tiffin; 26 grandchildren, Mark (Kristy) Ritzler, Laura (Jim) Amburgey, Rick (Nicole) Ritzler, Tony (Evie) Ritzler, Azure and Angela Logsdon, Kristie (Jon) Otterbacher, Robbie (Serena) Ritzler, Tim Ritzler, Amanda Ritzler, Andy (Amanda) Ritzler, Jackie Ritzler, Tim (Renee) Schumm, Katie (Kevin) Firestone, Aaron, Brandon, Taylor Ritzler, Samantha, Nathan and Allee Ritzler, Brad, Cory, Austin, Danielle Kontak and Drew and Luke Ritzler; 19 great-grandchildren, Tori, Lyndsay and Kelsie Ritzler, Jack, Rachel, Kelli, Megan Amburgey, Julia and Ty Ritzler, Blaine, Gabrielle and Alexander Ritzler, Caden and Grady Otterbacher, Landon and Logan Ritzler, Reece and Ryker Trumbull and Riley Schumm; a brother, James (Judy) Ritzler of South Carolina; and two sisters, Donna Elchert of Fostoria and Helen Vent of Upper Sandusky.
Joseph worked as the store manager at Firestone, Tiffin, and also worked as a salesman for Ashland Oil. Joseph was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and was a Hall of Fame member of the Calvert Boosters. Joseph was a 1941 graduate of Fostoria St. Wendelin High School and a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1943-1946 as a training instructor in Fresno, Calif.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; son, Rick Ritzler; a great-grandson, London Ritzler; four brothers, Rev. Donald, Alfred, George and John Ritzler; and a sister, Frances Kieffer.
A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Tiffin with the Rev. Gary Walters and the Rev. Frank Murd officiating. A rosary will be prayed 20 minutes prior to the Mass. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery.
Visitation for friends and family will be 2-8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4 at Engle-Shook Funeral Home and Crematory, 135 N. Washington St., Tiffin, OH 44883, (419) 447-1221.
