Francis L. Rolfes, 66, of Craig, IA, died suddenly on Wednesday, July 9, 1997, at his home in Craig. Services were held on Saturday afternoon, July 12, 1997, at St. John Lutheran Church in Craig, the Reverend Ernest Caltvedt officiating. Burial, under the direction of the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, was in St. John Cemetery at Craig, with graveside military honors by Heeren-McHale-Wilken Legion Post #724. A Scriptural wake service was held on Friday evening in the funeral home, with Father Richard Ball officiating.

Francis Leander Rolfes was born April 16, 1931, on the family farm in rural Plymouth County, IA, the son of Frank and Seraphine (Guntren) Rolfes. He attended country school in Stanton Township, and served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. On June 26, 1956, he married Nancy Collins in South Dakota, and farmed in the Le Mars and Merrill areas for several years.

On October 16, 1984, he married Doris "Lucky" Stinson in Le Mars. In 1986, they moved to Craig and he worked for Jim McNally Farms.

Mr. Rolfes was a past Commander of both the Olson-Halweg American Legion Post #125 of Merrill, and the Heeren - McHale - Wilken American Legion Post #724 of Brunsville. He had been a member of the Craig City Council for the past six years, and helped take care of the Craig City Park. He enjoyed polka dancing, woodworking, camping and playing
cards.

Survivors include his wife, Doris "Lucky" Rolfes; eleven children, Mary Ann Peterson of Craig, Karen Steffen and her husband Bill of Storm Lake, Donna Schindel and her husband Tim of Le Mars, Doris Kunkel and her husband Mark of Remsen, Ed Rolfes and his wife Denise of Le Mars, LaVon Klover and her husband Mike of Winona, MN, Lois Zaimes and her husband Mike of Modena, IL, Mark Rolfes and his wife Sandy of Le Mars, Dan Rolfes and his wife Amie of Omaha, NE, Tammie Haggert and her husband Ron of Remsen, David Rolfes and his fiancee Jaime Schuster of Oxford, OH; three stepchildren, Kathy Hoss and her husband Tom of Le Mars, Ellen Moeller and her fiance Dale Bohnenkamp of Spencer, and Alan Stinson of Alexandria, LA; 29 grandchildren; one brother, Jim Rolfes and his wife LuElla of Le Mars; three sisters, Dorothy Hurley of Mason City, Norma McCarthy and her husband Paul of Sioux City, and Sister Gertrude Rolfes of Ellendale, NE; a son-in-law, Allan 'Red" Dreckman of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents;an infant sister, Doris Rolfes; and two sons-in-law, Chuck Dreckman and Aaron Peterson.
