Frances Aldora Bender of Loveland, Colorado, died Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at the Prairie Creek Living Center in Strasburg, Colorado, at the age of 89. She was born December 10, 1922 to George and Katrina (Bauer) Sterkel.
She grew up in the Loveland area. She accepted Christ as her Savior at the age of 14 when the Loveland churches held a revival service. Frances was confirmed at the Loveland Congregational Church on April 10, 1938, and graduated from Loveland High School in May 1941. Frances married Chester Bender at the German Congregational Church in Windsor on Thanksgiving Day 1941. They farmed in the Eaton, Colorado, area for seven years after getting married, and then purchased a farm near Wiggins in 1948. They had two sons, Tom and Jack. After raising her sons, she attended and graduated from Greeley Commercial College in 1966.

Her love of music led her to direct choirs at many churches, including Wiggins Community Church, Christ Congregational Church in Fort Morgan, and Trinity Methodist Church in Loveland. After retirement, Chet and Frances spent their winters in Phoenix, Arizona, where Frances directed the choir at Desert Shadows Church. After Chester passed away in 1983, Frances continued to spend her winters in Phoenix for several more years. Later, while living in Greeley, Frances attended St. Paul's Congregational Church and organized the Prime Time Singers, a senior's singing group. They performed for local rest homes and other groups in the Greeley area.

Her favorite hobby was china painting. She loved presenting the finished product to her friends and relatives. Her family enjoyed her German cooking, and she had a special gift for entertaining large groups of friends and family in her home throughout the years. She was a wonderful and gracious hostess. Frances especially enjoyed spending time with her seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

At the time of her passing, she was a member of the First Christian Church in Loveland, Colorado.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and three brothers.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas (Marilyn) Bender of Wiggins, and Jackson (Judy) Bender of Byers, as well as her brother, Manuel (Mary Jo) Sterkel of Oceanside, California. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Steven Bender of Lakewood, Jody (Gregg) Leonnig of Milliken, Kelley (Roy) Hekowczyk of Greeley, Jason (Kelly) Bender of New Orleans, Louisiana, Matt Frick of Byers, Jason (Crystal) Frick of Strasburg, Sarah (Kurt) Tiedemann of Colorado Springs and nine great-grandchildren.
