Cyril Henry Hesse was born in Wisconsin Rapids, Wood County, WI on January 4, 1918, one of five children born to the marriage of Henry and Wilhelmina (Moser) Hesse. He attended Saints Peter and Paul grade school and went to St. Lawrence Seminary for high school. Following his two older brothers, Gerald and Simon, young Cyril entered the Capuchin novitiate at Huntington, Indiana on August 26, 1935, and was given the name Peter. He was one of 21 novices under novice master Clement Neubauer and his assistant, Paul Toschik. After first profession one year later, Peter moved to the college seminary at Garrison, NY, and graduated from there in 1940. He then began his theology courses at St. Anthony Seminary in Marathon, WI and was ordained on June 23, 1943.
In 1944, Father Hesse received his first ministerial assignment as associate pastor at Our Lady of Angels Parish in Harlem, NY. Much of his time there was spent finding work and housing for poor families. He soon received a letter of obedience instructing him to enroll in summer courses as preparation for teaching at St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt. Calvary, WI. Here he taught physics, math, world history, chemistry and biology from 1945–1952.
Father Hesse was assigned as local minister and pastor at St. Joseph Church in Appleton, WI in 1952. After a three-year assignment there, he was transferred to St. Lawrence where he taught the same subjects as before until 1958. In that year he arrived at St. Anthony's in Marathon, WI and taught moral theology to their seminarians until 1970. He also served as local minister from 1964-1970. In 1970, there was growing unrest among the students, who felt that the site isolated them too much from other seminarians. As a result, the students moved to Milwaukee and St. Anthony's became a retreat center.
Father Hesse soon recognized the need to reach out to people who were addicted to alcohol. He took several educational courses to strengthen his knowledge and understanding then envisioned offering retreats for recovering alcoholics. The first effort drew only 13 people, but the second offering grew to 30 attendees. Once word got out, the third retreat was filled and there was a waiting list. Father Hesse dubbed these as "Serenity Retreats" and for many years they continued to draw full houses. Father Hesse remained on the staff there for 46 years, before retiring and moving to Kaukauna, WI in September 2004.
