Dorothy L VanPelt Putman, 83, was born August 29, 1923, in Flowerfield, NE to Brooks and Henrietta (Leu) VanPelt. Dorothy graduated from Grover High School in Grover, CO. She continued her education and became a licensed cosmetologist. She worked in Alliance, NE and Longmont, CO.
Dorothy married Garland "Red" Putman on May 10, 1945 in Denver, CO. From this union two children were born: son Gary and daughter Jackie.
Dorothy lived with her family in the Sandhills of Colorado southeast of Kersey on the LF Ranch from 1948 to 1985. Her retirement years were mainly spent in Texas but they returned to the Sandhills of Nebraska in 2001. She appreciated her last 1 1/2 years at Cherry Hills Assisted Living in Valentine, NE having people care for her after she had spent a lifetime caring for others.
She was a wonderful cook, talented seamstress, and devoted wife and mother. Dorothy passed away July 8, 2007, at Cherry County Hospital in Valentine, NE. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Bob VanPelt and sister Marge Gross. She is survived by her husband Garland "Red" Putman of Valentine, son Gary (Teresa) Putman of Saratoga, CA, daughter Jackie (Roger) Chenoweth of Kilgore, NE. Grandchildren Travis, Ashley, and Brittany Putman, Jeff and Ryan Chenoweth and great grandson Waylon Chenoweth. Also surviving is sister Shirley Griffen of Tucson, AZ.
Graveside services and burial was held Friday July 13 at Crown hill Memorial Park in Wheat Ridge, CO. Sandoz Chapel of the Pines was in charge of the arrangements.
