John Burbank committed bigamy on 23 Jul 1787 in Yarmouth ME when he married Dorcas after abandoning his first wife and family in Massachusetts. Geo. Burbank Sedgley wrote concerning this in the foreward to The Genealogy of the Burbank Family, (1928):
"...I have tried to be frank and have suppressed nothing--even where the information was detrimental to the individual. I want to know what manner of people my ancestors were: I presume others want the same knowledge of their ancestry. In the Burbank family the worst to be found is in my own branch--the record of John Burbank, the sea captain and Revolutionary soldier. I repeat here what is said elsewhere: And yet if John Burbank had not done just as he did there would not have been any Freeman (Maine) branch of the family and this book would never have been written.
