Jonas was born to Niels Pederson Granum and Ragnild Jonasdatter. He was married to Anne Olsdottir Flatbydegarden and they had two children, Ragnhild and Kjerste. Anne died in 1840. Ragnhild was 17 and Kjerste was 12 when Jonas remarried in 1846 to Marit, the daughter of Halvord Syversen Praestegaardseie and Karen Andersdatter.

Jonas and Marit were married in Sor-Aurdal November 13, 1846. Their first child, Kari, was born in Norway in 1847. They decided to emigrate from Norway to the US, hoping that they would arrive before their second child was born. They set out in September, 1850 and were at sea for 14 weeks. The baby, Anne, was born at sea on January 1, 1851. The family moved first to Dane County, Wisconsin, where their next child, Helena, was born. In 1856 they moved to Grand Meadow, Minnesota, where four more children, Martha, Nekolene, Nels, and Berte were born, and where Jonas spent the rest of his life.

Presumably, Ragnhild (Rachel)and Kjerste came with Jonas and Marit to the US in 1850. Ragnhild married Hans Anderson. They lived in Racine, Mower County, MN. Kjerste (Christie) married Simon Simonson and they also lived in Racine.
