He was a farmer & a logger, taking over the family farm at Hofstad when his father Sivert retired. He married Ellen Kjerstina Kristiansdatter Momyr on 24 Jun 1950 at Roan Kirke, Sor Trondelag, Norway. He died in 1989. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Ellen who died in 1982.
He was survived by children: Sverre Ivar (Svanhild) Hopstad, Karstein Arnold (Kari) Hopstad and Elie Synove (Rolf) Alpay.
