In 1918, twenty to forty million people died worldwide in the 1918 Influenza Epidemic. Approximately 675,000 Americans died. Mary died at home of influenza just before she turned three years old. Her older sister Lena remembered her. Her mother kept a lock of her beautiful red hair in a trunk in Lena's garage, which the family found decades later.
