She began her career on the stage at 14 years of age, using the name "Herma Angelot," which she changed to "Mia May" in 1902. She was married to film director, producer, and writer Joe May. Her husband liked her surname May, thus changing his name to Joe May. She retired from films in 1924, upon the suicide of her daughter, actress Eva May. Upon moving to Hollywood, she appeared in a handful of films, retiring in 1943
