1918- Drafted into the army. Went to Britain. Served with the 355 Infantry Machine Gun C. He saw active duty in France and Germany.
1919, May 22- He returned to the U.S.
1919-1920 Helped his father on the farm.
1920-early 1930s he was editor and publisher of local newspapers.
early 1930s - an industrial accident aggravated an old war injury, affecting his lungs. Forced into semi-retirement.

John and Ida had 8 children.

John Warns served in World War I, and a significant number of his letters written home form the core of a 2018 book by Rich Lofthus, "From Wentworth to the Western Front: The World War One Odyssey of Private John Warns." Lofthus is Professor of History at Mount Marty University in Yankton, S.D.
