Ernst was born in Eidinghausen, Westfalen, Prussia. At the age of 2, he and his parents emigrated to America, arriving in New Orleans on 20 November 1854. From there they made their way to Franklin County, Missouri. Soon after, Ernst's father died. His mother married his father's brother a year later.
