Christian Theiler Nov. 6, 1862 – Feb. 1917
Christian Theiler, well known resident of Washington township, and for years a familiar
figure in and around Monticello, passed away at the Monticello house at 4 o'clock Sunday morning, after an illness of only a few days duration. The cause of his death is attributed to pneumonia which developed following a siege of la grippe. Mr. Theiler's condition was not considered critical until a day or two before the end. He was up and about the hotel as late as Friday afternoon, and hence the news of his rather sudden demise came as a shock to his numerous relatives and friends.

The subject of this sketch was born on Nov. 6, 1862, at Spiez, Canton of Bern,
Switzerland, and had reached the age of 54 years, 3 months and 19 days at the time of his death. When he was but five years of age his parents came here from the land of their nativity and located on a farm in Washington township. Since then he had always made his home in this vicinity. He remained at home as long as his parents lived, and later conducted the homestead farm for a period of five years in partnership with his brother, Robert. He then sold out to his brother and for a number of years thereafter he was employed as a cheesemaker. Of late years he had been engaged in various occupations, being the owner of a threshing outfit to which he devoted his time during the fall and early winter months.
Mr. Theiler was a man who enjoyed an enviable reputation for honesty and square dealing. By reason of his open hearted and friendly disposition he won the friendship and esteem of a large circle of acquaintances in this and other parts of the county, all of whom learned of his death with sincere regret.

The deceased was never married. He was one of a family of six children, all of whom but two, Mrs. Caroline Blum, of Washington township, and Robert Theiler, of Monroe, have preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at the Reformed church in Washington township at 1 o'clock
Tuesday afternoon, and interment was in the family lot in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. A. Muehlmeier officiated.
