Maren Pedersen was born in Linå parish, Skanderborg county, Denmark. Currently the area is part of the City of Silkeborg, which did not exist when she was born. I have visited the area and the church in Linå. Her father was not her mother's husband, but a man named Peder so she was Pedersen. She was my great-grandmother, the mother of 4 sons and 3 daughters. Her daughters died very young and were buried in DK. Her 4 sons came to the US at different times. Theodore and Andrew came with their father August, arriving in July 1871. Spelling was not important. August's birth name in Slesvig-Holsten under DK rule was Dürkopp. In DK proper that was Dyrkopp. In the US he used Duhrkoop. Theodore and Andrew used Dehrkoop. Their youngest brother Sivert Marius (Miles) Dyrkopp, who was very young when they left, came alone to the US in 1883 via Canada. Their mother left DK alone in 1881 and spent a few years working in Canada before coming to Iowa. We have her ship record to Quebec and her son's record leaving DK alone. Her obituary mentions her stay in Canada. My grandfather Christian H. F. Dyhrkopp was the last to come. He arrived in July 1887. He made the tombstone pictured for his mother. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Spencer, Clay, Iowa. Miles is buried in Rose Memorial Park in Fort Bragg, Mendocino, Calif. (no marker). Andrew Dehrkoop is buried in the Oneida Cemetery south of Dysart, Tama, Iowa. Their father is buried in Jamestown, Stutsman, North Dakota (no marker); buried by the county in 1890. I have more details and original records to support all of this information. You may contact me if you would like more information.
