Marietta "Mary Etta" Mertz was the daughter of William Bernhardt & Marietta "Maria" Ann "Kaiser" Mertz. She was raised and attended schools in Des Moines County, Iowa.

Marietta became a school teacher and moved to Green Garden, Ellsworth County, Kansas where she taught at Green Garden. It is believed that she lived with Rev. Charles H. & Mary "Enoch" Montgomery. Rev. Charles Montgomery's brother. Henry Worth Montgomery, was also living in the area.

Marietta married Henry Worth Montgomery in Green Garden on 24 Apr 1889. They had six children:
1. Winnifred Alwilda Montgomery
2. Bernard Montgomery (Twin)
3. Robert Montgomery (Twin)
4. Winston W. Montgomery
5. Glen Harold Montgomery
6. Sherman Arthur Montgomery
The twins died by the age of 3 months from Cholera.

Before the twins were born, Henry and Marietta had moved to Wabaunsee County, Kansas and lived near her brother Sherman Mertz. By 1900 they had bought a farm in Eureka, Rice County, Kansas.

Marietta filed for divorce from Henry in 1906 in Rice County. She was given the farm which she later sold and bought a farm in Kingman County, where they were living in 1910. This farm was later sold and she and her children were living on a farm she owned near Cimarron, Gray County.

In 1919, when her son Winston was leaving for World War I, they sold their farm in Cimarron and moved to Avon, Coffey County, Kansas to be near their daughter and son-in-law, William & Winnifred Foulke.

Marietta moved from the farm to Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas where she owned her home at 1126 Tyler. She lived here until her death in 1939.
