Evelyn was born May 7, 1920 in Luzerne, Pa. to Gail and Rebecca Rood.
She was predeceased by her husband Karl Umiker; brothers Robert and Ralph Rood; sisters, Norma Davis and Arlene Umiker; and grandniece, Sherril Lynn Aversa.
Survivors include sister, Lorraine Lewis and husband George, Mount Joy, PA.; sister- in- laws, Hulda Campbell, of East Berkshire, NY, and Freda Klossner Umiker of Geneva, NY., her nephews, Donald Umiker of Valrico, FL.; Gary Umiker and wife Sharon of Berkshire, NY; and Tom Umiker and wife Julie of Plant City, FL; niece Janet Aversa and husband Alex of Valrico, FL; nephews Ken Lewis and Jim Lewis and nieces Carol Johnson, Julie Lewis, and Ellen McCaffrey all of Lancaster County, Pa.; nephew Kevin Rood of Plant City, FL. and from California, her brother Robert Rood's children Kathy, Gail, and Bobby and her sister Norma Davis' children David, Susan, and Mary Jane; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.
Evelyn grew up on the family farm in Berkshire, NY, attended the South Berkshire one room school and graduated from Berkshire High School.
On November 5, 1939 Evelyn married Karl Umiker and they spent over 50 years together, when Karl passed away on January 2, 1990.
Evelyn and Karl started in the milk business in the 40's in Binghamton, NY, moving to Berkshire in 1943, where they began producing, bottling and delivering milk to homes, schools and businesses. Evelyn also operated a beauty parlor in their home.
They sold their farm and milk business in 1956 and moved to Florida and built a poultry farm. Evelyn became a real estate broker. 1967 brought a new venture when Karl and Evelyn planted their first strawberry crop that would lead to years of producing strawberries highlighted by being named Plant City's "Outstanding Strawberry Grower of the Year" in 1973.
Just days away from her 92nd birthday, Evelyn peacefully passed at home surrounded by family.
The family would like to thank her many caregivers for their kindness; and also thank her pallbearers, grandnephews Ted Aversa, Dustin Umiker, Pete MacLaren, and Tim Pratte, and nephews Donald Umiker and Tom Umiker.
Visitation will take place Saturday, May 5, at 10 AM and Funeral services will follow at 11 AM at Wells Memorial Chapel in Plant City, FL with Rev. Johnny E. Nicely officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
