In 1881, the family emigrated from Wiesbaum to America, arriving in New York, before moving on to Kenosha, Wisconsin. They stayed there only a short while before moving on to Hanson County, South Dakota, near the town of Epiphany.
It was here that she married John Anton Schmitt on April 27th, 1885 at the Church of the Epiphany.
Together they raised nine children, four of whom entered the religious life; two as Benidictine Sisters, one as a Xaiverian Brother and another as a diocesan Priest, who went on to become a Monsignor.
On November 7th, 1925, Gertrude became a widow and continued to live the rest of her life in The Epiphany area, until shortly before her death, when she was hospitalized in Yankton, South Dakota, where she died on March 24th, 1946.
Her funeral was attended by many religious officials from the area.
