Longtime Albuquerque, NM resident Lorraine Flores, age 89, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, June 24, 2012 following a lengthy illness.
Lorraine was surrounded by friends and family at the time of her passing.
Lorraine was born Lorraine Frost to Henry and Josephine in Dubuque, Iowa on April 12, 1923 and was the third of four children.
Lorraine graduated from Dubuque High School in 1941 and worked at the Dubuque Packing Company for a short time. In 1944, during World War II, she joined the United States Navy as part of the Woman Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service (WAVES) program and was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Shoemaker.
While there she met United States Marine, Sgt. Hugh Flores, whom she would marry at the War's end in 1945. In 1946, Lorraine moved back to Dubuque and gave birth to the couple's first child, Carol. Hugo completes his service in 1947 and they lived in Dubuque for a short time before moving to Albuquerque, NM in 1948 and then to Madrid, NM where their second child, Greg, was born.
In 1949, the couple again moved to Albuquerque where the rest of their children, Richard, Pam, Mike and Tim were born. They have resided at their current home in the Northeast Heights since 1952.
Lorraine worked for Albuquerque Public Schools for five years and at Valley Gold Dairies for six. Lorraine also served as the executive secretary for the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce. Lorraine was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary and worked with the Boys State Program.
A lifelong Catholic, she was an active member of Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Albuquerque since moving to their present home in 1952. Lorraine, along with Hugo, was an avid fan of the University of New Mexico Lobo men's basketball team.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her father, mother and brother, Bob.
Lorraine is survived by her husband, Hugo, her sister, Virginia, brother, Charlie, daughter, Carol Torres and her husband, Eddie of Tularosa, NM, son, Greg Flores and his wife, Deborah, son, Richard Flores and his wife, Barbara, son, Michael Flores and his wife, Barbara, daughter, Pam Highum all of Albuquerque and son, Tim and his wife, Susan of Tularosa, NM, 15 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.
A Rosary and Mass will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at Queen of Heaven Catholic Church, 5311 Phoenix Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM. Interment services will take place at Santa Fé National Cemetery, Santa Fé, NM. Pallbearers are granddaughters, Karen, Carrie, Amy, Jenny, Dawn, Shalee and Melanie.
