Charles Livingston Nelson was the son of C.L. Nelson, a former New York stockbroker and merchant of Louisville, Kentucky, and Henrietta Moughon Bond Nelson of Macon, Georgia. His death certificate says he was born in 1876, though the 1930 census implies that he was born about 1864, which I believe is correct. Especially since there is a Charles Nelson that was a 16-year old schoolboy on the Louisville 1880 census, which I believe is him, as his parents were from Georgia.

I am unable to locate the grave of Charles' father, C.L Nelson, though his mom's obituary indicates that he died about 1891. I recommend looking at his mother's page. Her obituary contains a lot of information about his siblings and other interesting facts.

Charles was the Resident Manager of Fidelity Casual Insurance Company and he was a councilman in Louisville for a while.

In the 1900 census, (at age 35) Charles was living with his brother Joseph Bond, Jr.'s family at 1635 Third Avenue in Louisville. His brother died in 1901. It would appear that Charles then married his brother's wife, Leila Wood Bond, on July 21, 1903, perhaps out of an obligation to financially support her and her two daughters, Saida Wood Bond (Withers) and Minnie Louise Bond (Garvan). The brothers (Joseph and Charles) both worked for the same insurance company. Leila passed away in 1909, and was buried in Macon, Georgia in the cemetery where Joseph Bond is.

In 1911, Charles married Grace Ignore York of Pine Bluff, Arkansas (or alternately Memphis, Tennessee) and he built her a fabulous large home at 2327 Cherokee Parkway in Louisville. The 1920 census shows them living there with a 4-year old daughter Elizabeth, as well as Grace's mother (Elizabeth Bowman York, memorial #139311191) and several other members of Grace's family (nieces and nephews, etc.), and a nurse. They had a stillborn son, Charles L. Nelson, Jr., in 1914, and he is buried in Cave Hill, though not in the family plot. That home was sold in 1923. On Charles' death certificate in 1933, they were living at the Brown Hotel (1222).

Grace is not buried with Charles at Cave Hill, though her mother, a sister, and niece and great-niece are. The last time Grace York Nelson was in the Louisville City Directory was 1939, still listed as his widow, and living at 412 Kensington Court. I can find no further records of his daughter, Elizabeth Y. Nelson, after the 1930 census, where she and Charles and Grace lived at 1028 Cherokee Road, and she was 14 years old. Grace somehow ended up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she died in 1964. She never remarried.

Cave Hill records indicate that Charles L. Nelson was buried Dec. 7, 1933, though his death certificate shows him being buried here right away. I believe it may be an error on the cemetery records.
