Peter Fried, 89, Mandan, died Feb. 26, 2005, at his home, in the presence of his family. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Crown Butte, with the Rev. John O'Leary, celebrant. Burial
will be at St. Vincent's Catholic Church Cemetery, Crown Butte.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a St. Vincent Verein Rosary at 7 p.m. and a parish-vigil at 7:30 p.m. There will be visitation only at the funeral home.

He was born Feb. 10, 1916, on the family farm north west of Mandan, the son of Jacob and Eva (Aman) Fried. He was raised and educated in the Crown Butte area. He married Margaret Paul Oct. 22, 1940, at St. Anthony. After their marriage, they continued to farm in the Crown Butte area where he semi-retired from farming, but continued to live on the farm, which is now a fourth generation farm.

In his younger years he started to work with horses, where he became an accomplished horseman. He was proud of being a sharp shooter and claimed he could hit a dime with one shot. He had a great sense of humor and loved a
practical joke, as long as the joke was not on him. Peter was a great story teller and would repeat those stories again and again. He spent some time as a well digger and had raised honey bees. Farming included range and dairy cattle, and grain. He did take time to relax and play cards and enjoyed traveling throughout the Western United States. Most of all, his family was central in his life. He was a loving, patient father. These special memories will be cherished by his family.

Peter is survived by his wife, Margaret, Mandan; his eleven children and their spouses, Monica (Eugene) Thomas, Mary (Emil) Kalvoda, Ralph (Mary) Fried, George (Elaine) Fried, Cathy (Anton) Leier, Pat (Jim) Schantz, Jim (Arlene) Fried and Tom (Linda) Fried, all of Mandan, Eva (David) Lehrman, Tucson, Ariz., Agnes (Harold) Bauer and Fran (Dennis) Auch, both of Mandan; 51 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and one step-grandchild; his sister, Sister Ralphine Fried,
OSB, Annunciation Priory, Bismarck; and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack Paul, George (Frances) Paul, Fabian (Hildegard) Paul, Clara Markel, Nick (Rosemary) Paul, Pat (Steve) Mildenberger, Eilene Paul, Tony ( Elaine) Paul and
Ida Fried, Bismarck.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Jerome, Joseph (infant), Ralph and Rose, and Joseph; seven sisters, Clem and George Immel, Cletus Regner, Mathilda and Magdalen, (infants), Magdalen, Otilia and Ralph Weber, Sister Lucilda Fried, and Sister Clement Fried; Joe and Monica Paul, John and Frances Paul, Harry and Katherine Kottsick, Margie Paul, Ignatz Markel, Leo and Peter
Paul.; two grandchildren, Tracie Schmidt and Travis Schmidt; one step-grandchild, Jesse Schantz; and one great-grandchild. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)
