Sara Joyce (Bode) Kuykendall, 74, of Valley Spring, Texas, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2012.

She was born April 3, 1938, to Lucille (Hanna) Bode and Ted J. Bode in Cherokee, Texas She was preceded in death by her father; and brother Richard Clyde Bode. Survivors include her mother, Lucille (Hanna) Bode of Pontotoc, Texas; husband Randy Kuykendall of Valley Spring, Texas; daughter Kippi Kenney and Bill Ashabranner of Valley Spring, Texas; sisters Lugenia Capps of Pontotoc, Texas, and Vicki Barker of Cherokee, Texas; brothers Ken Bode of Voca, Texas, and Tooter Bode of San Antonio, Texas; one grandson, Steele Jewel Kenney of Valley Spring, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sara graduated in 1956 from Mason High School, where she was very popular and had many friends. She was a cheerleader, played volleyball and even rode a steer in the FFA rodeo. Upon graduation she took her first job at the Corner Drug Store in Llano. All the young gentlemen rushed in to order a milk shake from the good-looking girl behind the counter! Her next job was as a telephone operator at the Llano Switchboard. She had lots of fond memories of fun times and clever pranks with the other operators. She eventually transferred to Soutwestern Bell in Austin and moved to the big city for several years. It didn't take long for her to return home to the country lifestyle she so loved. And it didn't take long for her to fall in love with and marry Randy on Feb. 12, 1967, in Valley Spring, a longtime acquaintance who soon became the love of her life. They lived on the same farm and ranch in Valley Spring up until the time of her death. She enjoyed being a homemaker and helping out with all aspects of the farm, ranch and bulldozer operation. She especially enjoyed gambling trips to Louisiana, where "Miss Sara" was the queen of the slot machines! Sara cared for everyone and was concerned about all of our comfort even in her last days and moments. She fought a long, brave battle with lung cancer and remained positive and had faith in God each and every step of the way. Our sweet Sara went to be with the Lord peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Sara was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother. Her most cherished relationship was with her grandson, Steele, who thought his Ja-Ja hung the moon. She had a unique knack for making each and every person she came into contact with feel special and had many friends from both near and far. She was loved by all and will be missed by all. Visitation was held Monday, July 30, 2012, in Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home chapel. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, 2012, in Waldrope-Hatfield-Hawthorne Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Stan Troy officiating, burial to follow in Cold Creek Cemetery.
