Catherine Schmitz, oldest of a family of eight was born November 25th, 1849 at Mt. Calvary, Fond du Lac County, and died at Plain, Sauk County, February 22nd, 1930, having attained the age of eighty years, 2 months, and 27 days. The decedent is survived by one son, Anthony Riek, one daughter, Elizabeth, one step-daughter, Mrs. Frank Luenenschloss, thirteen grandchildren and four sisters: Mrs. Walter Greenheck, Mrs. Martin Greenheck, Mrs. Cornelius Greenheck and Mrs. James Hill, the latter of Ephrata, Washington.
After the death of her father, when the deceased was fifteen years of age, the family removed to Bear Valley, Richland County, where they endured the hardships and privations of pioneers.
On April 13, 1880, the deceased was joined in matrimony to Anthony Riek who preceded her in death February 7th, 1903. To this union were born five children, two of whom died in infancy, Mrs. Mary Lins, who preceded her in death May 15, 1924, Anthony and Elizabeth.
Her final illness, which she bore so patiently was short and she passed to a better world and her eternal reward. Funeral services were conducted February 24th from St. Luke's Chapel by Rev. Chas. Surges, assisted by Rev. Flad and Rev. Gaffney. Interment was made in St. Luke's Cemetery.
