After graduating from the Horace Mann School then the University of Southern California, he joined The Durst Organization which had been founded by his father. That same year, 1940, he married Bernice Herstein. They were the parents of Robert, Douglas, Thomas & Wendy Durst Kreeger.
After the death of his father in 1974 he took over control of the family business. In 1989, he invented & installed the National Debt Clock. After his death, his son Douglas & nephew Jonathan took over control of the family business.
