Christian was born in Schleitheim, Schaffhausen, Switzerland. He was the son of Heinrich Mader, who died in Switzerland, and Anna Russenberger. Christian immigrated to this country in 1867. His first wife was Maria Sollberger, whom he married on November 16, 1871. He married a second time to Wilhelmina Wetzel. He was first buried in the First Congregational Church Cemetery in Etna on Sunday, November 17, 1889, but was disinterred and reinterred in Greenwood Cemetery on March 8, 1918.
