Allan L Mikkelson, age 86, passed away peacefully, at home, on Monday, August 27th, 2012. Born May 4, 1926 in Fountain. Green, Utah, to Niels E. and Olevia Llewellyn Mikkelson. He attended school in Fountain. Green and Moroni, Utah where he played all sports, basketball being his favorite. He also played the sousaphone in the school band and in The Revelers dance band.
During World War II, he served proudly, in the U.S. Merchant Marines. He married his sweetheart, Joyce Winn, in 1948 in Nephi, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple, in 1958. He was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully in many callings throughout his life. Allan and Joyce served a leadership mission to the Liberty Wells Stake where they made lasting friendships.
He worked for Thayne Construction Company for many years-bringing he and his bride to Salt Lake City. He then worked at South East Furniture Company for 30+ years managing the carpet department. He loved sports. He was an avid bowler and was a competitive league player. He was also a devoted University of Utah basketball fan and had been a season ticket holder since the 60s. He was a selfless friend. He helped countless neighbors, mowing lawns, shoveling snow-always willing to do anything to help others. Completely self-taught, there wasn't anything he couldn't fix or build.
Allan's greatest joy was his family. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by Joyce, his wife of 64 years, his three children, Lanny, Becky (Ray Kelley), and Maryann (Stacy Young), his grandchildren, Paul (Corinne), Jeremy, Sarah, Andrea, Taylor, Sam, Kensie, and Brynn, his great-grandson Jaden, and his sister, Dorothy (Dan Nelson). Preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and great-granddaughter, Rylee Rae.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, August 30th, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 Highland Dr., Salt Lake City, UT. Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 31st, 2012, at the Wasatch Ward building, 1750 S. 1500 E., Salt Lake City, UT, at 11:00 a.m., with a viewing from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
