Merwin C. "Slick" Schlighting died Dec. 23, 2002 at Memorial Hospital of Converse County. He was the third son of Vern and Henry Schlichting. He started school at the Hyland community and graduated in Douglas. He entered the Army Air Corps of Engineers and served in the South Pacific for about four years. On Dec. 31, 1946, he married Irma Swickhammer. They had two children and later divorced. Mr. Schlichting worked for Pep Saul and then bought Lee's Tavern, which he ran for several years. After selling that business, he opened Slick's Sportin' House, a sporting goods store, then sold it. He then developed a locksmith businss, Loc Docs, which he operated with his long-time associate, Mary Jo Poirot. He is survived by sisters Doris Nielsen of Spring Valley, Calif., and Fritz Metcalf of Fruita, Colo.; seven grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; his parents; children Craig Schlichting and Randi Schlichting; and brothers Earl Schlichting and Bill Schlichting.
