Born in Braunshain, Saxon-Altenburg to Gottlob Heinrich and Justine (Kroeber) Lindner. Worked as Wollkämmer (wool carder) in Ronneburg (now in Kreis Greiz, Thuringen). While there he married Friederike Caroline Spiegel of Gera on June 20, 1847 in Gera.

In 1857 immigrated to US with wife and two sons. The first few years stayed on farm with parents in Town of Calumet, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. However there is also a story that they may have stayed first in St.Louis, MO, before moving on to Wisconsin. In 1862 he bought land in Calumetville where he lived until his death.

In addition to Robert E and Alvin who were born in Ronneburg, the couple had Richard A and Frank Gottlieb who were born in Town of Calumet.

His wife preceded him in death.

He is variously listed as weaver, laborer, retired farmer.
