John Furness was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, the son of a ship's carpenter and harbor pilot. Moving to San Francisco in 1870, John worked as a carpenter and home contractor, building mostly in the Haight Ashbury district in the 1880s and 1890s. Many of his homes survived the great earthquake and fire of 1906. John Furness married Emma Wilson in San Francisco in 1873. They had two daughters, Edna Furness Markle, 1874-1949, and Edith Furness Benson, 1878-1957.
