Juergen Grueeberg, 17, of 3107 Flamingo, and Hugo W. Brandt, 82, of Rt. 1, Cuero, were killed Thursday afternoon and Thursday night in traffic accidents in Victoria and DeWitt County.
Grueneberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Grueneberg, was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital following a collision involving a small van truck and a truck-tractor and trailer at the Houston Highway intersection with Delmar Drive.
BROTHER CRITICAL
His brother, Ralph, 18, listed as driver of the small van, suffered a broken back and facial and skull fractures and was listed in "critical but guarded" condition at Citizens Memorial Hospital's intensive care unit.
The truck driver, Elvin Nuells, 22, of 3403 Woodlawn St., an employee of Groce-Wearden Co., escaped injury in the 9:05 p.m. crasch.
Brandt was dead on arrival at a Cuero hospital following a two-car crash seven miles from Cuero on the San Antonio Highway - U. S. Highway 87, it occurred at 3:35 p.m.
WIFE INJURED
Brandt's wife, Cynthia, 79, and Jimmie J. Grounds, 38, of San Antonio, were admitted to Cuero Community Hospital. Mrs. Brandt, a passenger in her husband's car, suffered severe lacerations and Grounds, driver of the other car, received a broken right arm and lacerations.
Both deaths were the first of 1972 in the Victoria City limits and DeWitt County, as compared to none at this time last year.
Police, who were still investigation the accident late Thursday night, said Ralph Grueneberg had stopped on Delmar at a traffic signal and then proceeded north. They said the truck was westbound in the 3600 block of Houston Highway.
The impact point was at the right front of the van and the left front fender of the truck-tractor.
Juergen Grueneberg was thrown out on the right side of the van truck, officers said.
Two city ambulances took the brothers to the hospital.
Highway Patrolman Jim Fitzpatrick of Cuero said the DeWitt County crash occurred when Brandt attempted a left turn off the highway onto a county road.
He said Grounds was driving toward San Antonio when the cars collided on the shoulder on Grounds' side of the highway. Brandt had been headed toward Cuero.
Funeral arrangements for Grueneberg are pending and will be announced by Colonial Funeral Home.
