Frances W. Warren (1916-2012)

Frances Watzek Warren, 96, died on September 29, of age related causes. She was born in Portland on August 15, 1916 to Harlan and Helen Watzek, and grew up in Wauna, a small lumber town on the Columbia River. She attended high school at St. Helen's Hall in Portland and graduated from the University of Oregon, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority.

Fran married Edward Elfving of Astoria, her college sweetheart. They had two children, Charles and Karen. Ed enlisted in the Army in WWII, and Fran joined the Red Cross as a nursing volunteer in Astoria. After Ed's death in the war, Fran and the children spent some time with her brother in Arkansas, where she served as a director of the Crossett Lumber Company. They returned to Astoria, and in 1948 Fran married John Warren, a widower with two daughters, Corlene and Sue.

The family moved to Eugene where John coached basketball at the University of Oregon. Fran juggled her duties as a wife and mother with tireless work in the community that was to characterize her life. She volunteered at Sacred Heart in various capacities for many years and served on the boards of directors of Sacred Heart Hospital, the Sacred Heart Foundation, the Junior League of Eugene, The American Cancer Society, and the Eugene Family YMCA among others.

Fran was an energetic and effective fund-raiser whose personal generosity set an outstanding example for others. She is fondly remembered, as well, for such kindnesses as the many boxes of Christmas cookies she baked and delivered each year, and for the hours she spent comforting ill and grieving friends. Fran's inner strength, unstinting generosity and positive outlook inspired all who knew her and formed the basis of her legacy to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who were her greatest joy.

She is survived by three of her children: Charles Warren of Eugene, Karen Wickstrand of Seattle, and Sue Miller of Bend, by her brother Peter Watzek of Greenville Mississippi, and by twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1465 Coburg Road on October 13 at 11:00 AM with private burial at Rest Haven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church or Lane Community Foundation for the Frances Warren Nursing Scholarship.
