Hans worked as a machinist for a packing house. He and his wife Sophia were married around 1867. They left their residence in Gaarden, Holstein (Schleswig-Holstein), Germany aboard the ship "Lessing". They departed from Hamburg, Germany on June 1, 1881 and arrived in New York City on June 16, 1881.

The ship manifest records for both their departure and arrival are hard to read, but they had 7 children who traveled with them, ranging in age from 14 to 11 months old. The names were Pauline?, age 14, Teh/Ths?, age 9, Dora, age 8, Emma, age 7, Amanda, age 4, Hilmer, age 2, and Hans, 11 months old.

They were the known parents of at least five children still living after 1900: Dora, Henry Hauser Christian Goettsche (born Feb. 16, 1879, listed as Hilmer on ship records), Hans, Minnie, John William and John A. Goettsche.

John A. (age 32) was listed as a son on the 1900 census record for Omaha, NE with a date of birth of Nov. 1867, which would be about the same age as the above referenced Pauline on the ship records.

Children Minnie and John William were both born in Nebraska. John William's full name was listed as William August John Goettsche on both his WWI and WWII Draft Registration Cards.
