-----------------------------------
Richard Madison Stewart was born about 1833 in Ohio to Richard Stewart and Barbara Creacy. Both of his parents were born in VA.

Richard married Lucinda Mathews on 27 Apr 1849 in Gallia County, Ohio. Together they bore 9 known children: William J., b. 13 Nov 1850; Louisa J., b. 2 Sep 1851; Barbara Ann, b. 10 Sep 1854; Richard C., b. 8 Jan 1857; Susan, b. 14 Sep 1858; Harriet M., b. 10 Nov 1859; Pleasant Isaac, b. 2 Aug 1861; Catherine Eva, b. 28 Apr 1863; Amanda Marteley, b. 28 Nov 1864. Between the births of their children Harriet in Pleasant in 1861 Richard and Lucinda moved to Calvin Township, Cass County, Michigan.

Richard enlisted for one year of service as a private in the 12th USCT Volunteers Company D on 25 Oct 1864 in Urbana OH in order to do his part in the fight against the South. However, tragedy struck in the form of disease as it did with many of the men who fought in the Civil War. On December 29, 1864 Richard was admitted to Wilson General Hospital in Nashille, TN for pneumonia. Sadly a few days later on 9 Jan 1865 and slightly more than 2 months after he enlisted, Richard Madison Stewart died in Wilson General Hospital far from his wife and children at the young age of 32. Richard Madison Stewart was to fight for the right of his people to be freed from slavery and to determine their own lives. In the end he paid with his life.

Richard's wife Lucinda was left to raise their children, some of whom would be too young to remember their father. Today Richard and Lucinda lie next to each other in the cemetery.
