Alexander Idt
Alexander Idt, was born January 22, 1883 at the village of Balzer, Russia. On Dec. 21, 1904 he united in wedlock with Miss Katherina Bender. In this union five children were born, 4 sons and one daughter. In the year of 1910 they emigrated to America and April the 17th of the same year they came to Sutton, Nebr., where they established their home and have lived here since.

Last summer they moved temporariliy to Scottsbluff, Nebr., to work in the sugar beet fields. On account of the bad drinking water, Mr. Idt contracted a very severe case of typhyus, together with pneumonia. Although he was brought home as speedily as possible, he passed away at his home three days later in spite of all medical assistance and loving care, on Friday, Nov. 14, at 10:30 a.m., surrounded by his weeping family, the widow and the five children.

This family experienced exceptionally great hardship last summer, while living in a beet workers' shanty near Scottsbluff [sic] First, their third eldest son, George was taken very ill with typhus and was for a time at the point of death. Then, their second son Wilhelm became dangerously ill and at last the father himself. Much of the work undertaken could not be finished and almost all of the earnings were spent for medical aid and the trip home.

Mr. Idt was well known in our twon and enjoyed the good will and respect of everyone. Being a laborer with his meager savings he bought a small property consisting of a small home and garden, the only wealth now left for the widow with her five children, none of whom are able to support the family.

The charitable spirit of the citizens of Sutton was stirred to action and a nice sum of money collected, which covered all the funeral expenses and the cost of the lot in the cemetery, with some cash left over, which was given the widow. The doctors' assistance here was rendered free of charge and shows the true Christian love in contrast to some of the Scottsbluff doctors who were charging these poor people an almost unbelievable amount

The deceased attained the age of 41 years, 9 months and 23 days. Those to mourn his departure are: the widow and five children, Alexander, Wilhelm, George, Johannes and Eugenie. Both his parents are also still living as well as three brothers, but they are still living in Russia. There are also at Sutton quite a few loving relatives and friends who will now have an opportunity to extend their charity and sympathy to this bereaved family for some time in the future.

The funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 17 at the home of the deceased at 1:30 oclock [sic] and at 2 oclock [sic] at the First Reformed Church. Rev. R. Birk conducted the service and preached a sermon on the text of Genesis 48-21: "Behold I die, but God shall be with you." The Church was filled to its capacity and the interment took place at the City's cemetery.
