John Idt

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — John Idt, 92, died in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on July 24, 2009, following surgery.
He had recently moved with his wife to Crossville, Tenn., to live near their daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Bill Hart.
He was born to Alexander and Katherine (Bender) Idt in Sutton, Neb., on July 12, 1917. He received his education in Sutton Public Schools and at Lincoln School of Commerce and the University of Nebraska. He was employed by the federal government in Nebraska, was transferred to Baltimore, Md., and then to Washington, D.C.
He enlisted with the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Pharmacy Mate 2/c. After training, he was assigned to a five-member unit on special assignments. The unit served in Africa with the U.S. Navy, the Fifth Army in Italy, the Navy in London, and aboard a British hospital ship evacuating casualties from Normandy. He returned to Washington, D.C., and was assigned to a new five-member unit. The unit was assigned to the Marines on the invasion of Iwo Jima. On V-J Day, he was in Hawaii awaiting assignment.
He married Dorothy Claussen in Lincoln, Neb., in June 1949, and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. They made their homes in Kearney, Neb., and Dallas and Arlington, Texas. They retired to Kerrville, Texas, in 1985. They loved to dance.
Dorothy, his wife, survives, as do daughters, Paula Hart and husband, Bill, of Crossville, Tenn., and Denise Bearden of Bartlett, Tenn. Also surviving is a granddaughter, Staci Hart Moritz, her husband, Karl, and their sons, Aidan, Elliot and Ariel of Portland, Ore.; and a grandson, James David Hart, his wife, Kristina, and their daughter, Dorothea (Dottie) of Austin, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Alex (Satch), Bill and George; and a sister, Eugenia Prestin.
He served on Lutheran Church boards and service and social organizations' boards.
John requested no funeral and that his ashes to be scattered by family in the wind over a favorite vista.
A private memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
The family asks that any memorials be sent to Methodist Medical Center Foundation, P.O. Box 2529, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-2529, in John's name. His daughter, Paula, can be contacted at 931-788-0398 or billhart14(at)gmail.com.
