Obituary of Zachariah Miles

Another old soldier has been mustered out. He has answered the last roll call
and gone to that quiet encampment where war's alarms can never break his long
repose. He who had come unharmed from fields of carnage was suddenly overtaken
by the fell Destroyer of his peaceful home in Sheldon.
Friday fornoon, April 8, Zechariah Miles of Sheldon, went about his customary
occupation, apparently in his usual health; noon found him in his wonted place
at the family board to partake of the mid-day repast. It was a scene of
domestic happiness, for none in that little circle knew that grim Death sat with
them at the table. The meal almost concluded, Mr. Miles remarked, "how queer I
feel," and sank back in his chair. Those words were his last, Death had marked
his victim, the pointed shaft had flown and when his wife and children sprang to
support his sinking frame the husband and father had ceased to live.

Mr. Miles was born in Meigs Co., OH., February 15, 1838 and enlisted in the 56
Regt. Ohio Inft. Vol. in 1861. He was a brave soldier and served his country for
three years during the dark period of fraternal strife. He moved to Iroquois
Co., Illinois in 1874 and had resided at Sheldon for the last sixteen years. He
was a man of unassuming manners but of strong convictions, which he had the
courage to avow.

A wife and two children, a boy of 16 and a girl of 7 years, an aged mother and
one brother mourn his departure. A kind and considerate husband and an
indulgent father, he was beloved by his family; a member of the U. B. Church and
of the Grand Army of the Republic, he was esteemed and respected by all who know
him. Funeral services were conducted at the U. B. Church at Sheldon, by Rev. Wm
Stanley and Rev. Crumtaker on Sunday. Internment at Sheldon Cemetery with
mourners of the G. A. R. A host of friends sympathize with the relatives in
their sad bereavement.
