OBITUARY (From The Altamont Enterprise - September 10, 1998, pg. #19)

RENSSELAERVILLE - Niles C. Tanner, 75, of Rensselaerville died Sept. 1 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany.

He was born Nov. 17, 1922 in Rensselaerville, son of the late Raymond and Lena Wood Tanner. He was a former partner of the N & I Express, retiring in 1967, and then was a custodian for the Bethlehem School Disctrict, retiring in 1986.

He served in the Navy in World War II, on the USS Carolina and the USS Karin. He received the American Defense, the American Theater, the Asiatic Pacific (with three stars) the Victory and Good Conduct medals. For a time he also served in the New York State Guard. He was a member and past commander of Clark White Post 589, American Legion, and a member of Tri-Town Memorial Post 7229, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and was a past vice-commander of the Albany County American Legion.

He was a charter member of the Rensselaerville Volunteer Fire Col, and a former Scout master of Troop 80 in Rensselaerville.

He was also a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Rensselaerville, a past president of Episcopal Men of the Albany Diocese, and a member of the Cursillo Group.

Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Irene (Scoville) Tanner; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Chris Tanner of Middleburgh; a daughter and son-in-law, Candace T. and Rick Ruland of Greenville; two grandchildren, Travis and Heather Ruland of Greenville; three brothers - Raymond Tanner Jr. of Rensselaerville, Gardiner Tanner of Clarksville, and William Tanner of Vooheesville; three sisters - Bernice Waldron of Freehold (Greene Co.), Janet Furman of Clarksville, and Eleanor Layman of Valatie (Columbia Co.); and several nieces and nephes.

Three brothers - Charles, Roland, and Robert Tanner - are deceased.

Funeral services were Friday from the Trinity Episcopal Church in Rennselaerville.

The Rensselaerville Volunteer Fire Col, Clark White Post and Tri-Town Post conducted services for Mr. Tanner at the Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville.

Burial was in the Rensselaerville Cemetery.
