John Tanner was born in Germantown, Columbia County, NY, which is where the Plass family (his maternal grandparents) lived. Otherwise, he lived his entire life in Rensselaerville, NY. He was the eldest child of three and the only son of Wilson G. Tanner and Mary Plass.
He attended school through just 6th grade before pursuing employment. By June 1915, he was working as a chauffeurs’ helper, driving for the Rensselaerville to Albany Autobus service that his uncle Charles B. Tanner had established with his cousin, Stanton Shufelt. John continued to drive the autobus after his uncle’s untimely death at age 29 from influenza in December 1918. According to the 1925 NY State Census, he was still employed as a truck chauffeur.
John married Lena Mae Wood on September 28, 1919 in Rensselaerville, NY. They had 10 children, seven of which were born at home. They family lived on Albany Hill Road on a small farm. By 1930 (at age 32), John began working as a caretaker for the Huyck estate in Rensselerville, where he was still working in 1940 and was earning an annual wage of about $1,092.
Son Gardiner noted that his father enjoyed a particular brand of chewing tobacco called “Yum Yum”.
John was only 53 years old when he succumbed to kidney disease at Albany Hospital on March 27, 1950. His eldest son Charles would also die very young (age 47) from the same affliction. He is buried in the Tanner plot at the bottom of a very large hill in Rensselaerville Cemetery.
