Early in life, my Grandfather dreamed of flying planes and becoming a pilot. He begged his parents to allow him to take flying lessons at Albany Airport. They reluctanly allowed him to do this for a while. His lessons stopped after a serious accident happened at the airport (which he was not involved in).
Charley also loved cars a great deal. Like his brothers Niles, Gardiner & Doug, most family members remember him very kindly and thought him to be a gentle & easygoing man.
My grandfather met my grandmother Frances "Sue" Welsch while working as a porter at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, NY about 1940. He accepted a job as a crane operator at General Electric in September 1942. This is where he worked until the end of his life.
Charley & Sue were married in Colonie, NY on June 6th, 1943. Through the end of the 1940's, my grandparents and their growing family lived off New Scotland Road in Albany, NY. Their first child was Charles "Chuck" Sr. in 1945. Virginia ("Ginny") was born 3 years later. In 1950, they had twins with Dianne & Dennis. Gary was born in 1953.
In July 1957, they bought an 1880's farmhouse on the corner of Gardner Road and Route 146 near the village of Altamont. Julie was born the following year. This old house will always be remembered as the main "Tanner homestead" as each of their children grew up and even began raising their families here. The earliest existing Tanner family home videos were made during this era in 8mm by Charles Sr.
During the 1960's, my grandfather became very sick due to complications caused by poly-cystic kidney disease, an incurable and often hereditary disorder. Sadly, he succumbed to kidney disease in September 1967 at just age 47. This was nearly 2 years before my own birth, so I never had the chance to meet him. This biography and all of my ongoing research on the Tanner family shall be my tribute to him.
