He was an apprentice plumber in 1910 and later founded the J.J. Hessling Plumbing and Heating Company. He joined the Mitchell Hose Company in 1912 and later served as Assistant Fire Chief for over 35 years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society; Forth Degree Assembly of Knights of Columbus and the Order of ELKS.
