Born in Loveland, Colo, to George and Mary (Phenning) Kissler, he moved with his family at the age of six to the Yakima Valley where he was raised.
He served in the US Navy for six years and worked as an electrician for The Boeing Co and on the Grand Coulee Dam Columbia Basin project.
During World War II, he served in the Navy SeBees for three years in the Phillippines and on Midway Island.
He and Loretta Whealen were married Jan 28, 1946. They lived in Pullman where he was employed as an electrician at WSU. In 1947 they moved to the Whelan homestead on Union Flat west of Colfax.
He retired from farming in 1973 and they moved to Colfax. He then learned Spanish at Colfax High School and corresponded with pen pals in Mexico City and San Salvador. They also traveled throughout Mexico, the United States and Canada.
Surviving are his wife, Loretta, two daughters, Mary Ann Wigen, Colfax; and Jo Kimzey, Harrison, Idaho; two brothers, Ben and Dan, Quincy; and two sisters, Rachel Whealen and Hilda Herman, Spokane, and five grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials go to Home Health and Hospice or the Colfax Ambulance fund.
