Maria was one of eight children born in Russia to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Pfenning. She married George Kissler in 1898 and they emigrated to the United States in 1900. Maria and George had 6 sons and 4 daughters. The family first lived in McCook Nebraska, then Loveland, Colorado and finally in Wapato, Washington. At the time of her death Mary was survived by her husband, nine of her children and many grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son.

A biography was published following her death (Kirchenbote Vol. 80 #46, September 13, 1962) and there is also a published recollection by her daughter.
