Bernetta Chalk is Laid to Final Rest Wednesday

Mother Passes Away Leaving Four Children, One an Infant.

Impressive funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon in the First ward chapel for Mrs. Beretta Nielson Chalk, wife of James Chalk, who passed away at her home here Monday after giving birth to a baby boy. The chapel was crowded with friends and relatives. The many beautiful floral offerings were carried by girlhood friends of Mrs. Chalk.

Bishop Geo. F. Christensen of the Fourth ward presided at the services. A ladies chorus under direction of Mrs. A. J. Bird sang appropriate selections, and other musical numbers during the services were a vocal solo, "When You Come to the End of a Perfect Day," by Mrs. Florence Anderson, and a vocal duet, "That Wonderful Mother of Mine," by Mrs. Margaret Blomquist and Miss Elva Hansen. Mrs. Hortense M. Jones gave a biographical sketch of Mrs. Chalk. Wilford Hansen of Monroe, a counselor in the South Sevier stake presidency and a life long friend of Mr. and Mrs. Chalk, expressed high esteem for them and offered consolation to the bereaved husband and children. Other speakers were Mrs. Minni Gunn and Mrs. Jessie Poulson with whom Mrs. Chalk had worked in the relief society and primary. Mrs. Jos. L. Anderson read a poem she had composed in memory of Mrs. Chalk.

The invocation for the services was offered by A. J. Fillmore and the benediction by H. J. Hansen.

Interment was in the city cemetery. President R. D. Young dedicated the grave

W. D. Christensen, C. P. Black Enoch R. Larsen, Walter Ogden, Jos. M. Ogden and Oliver Larsen acted as pallbearers.

Bernetta Nielson Chalk was born September 14, 1889, at Richfield, a daughter of Niels Peter and Mary Ann Nielson. both natives of Denmark, who came to Sevier valley as pioneers. She was he youngest child in a family of nine. Her parents, her only sister, and three brothers preceded her in death. She was married to James A. Chalk of Monroe on June 4, 1909, in the Salt Lake temple by Elder John R. Winder. To this union were born, three girls and two boys.

Mrs. Chalk spent as much of her time as possible among the youth of the church, holding very responsible positions for fourteen years as secretary of the ward and stake primary associations under Mrs. Hortense M. Jones and Mrs. Amelia Hansen, presidents of the organizations. She was also secretary of the First ward Relief society, under Mrs. Minnie Gunn.

In 1918 the Chalk family moved to Idaho; in 1922, to California; in 1927 to Arizona, and back to Richfield in August 1930. They moved to these various localities in an effort to improve Mrs. Chalks health. In all places of residence she was soon called on to render her services among the youth. However, her desire at all times was to return to her home in Richfield.

Surviving are the husband and children, Dorothy, 16, Naomi, 12, Bernice, 10, James, 7, and the infant David. The brothers who survive are Peter Nielson of San Pedro, California; Dorius Nielson of California; Ammon, Taylor and Nephi Nielson of Richfield.
