Jan was born in 14 May 1827 in Brandlín 20, Bohemia. His father was a tailor, and Jan became a tailor also. He married Kateřina Havel in Tučapy in 1847. Jan and Kateřina had seven children (three died before 1863) before she died in late 1862.

Jan then married Marie Jordak in 1863. He and Marie had four children, but Marie and two of her children died in a cholera epidemic in Tučapy in November 1866.

Jan married Marie Liegler in 1867 and soon thereafter emigrated to the United States with four of his six children. He was living in Ward 9 in Chicago in 1870 - and survived the Great Chicago Fire.

Peter, Henry, Terezie, and Josef ultimately came to the United States; sons František and Jan remained in Bohemia. The elder Jan worked in Chicago for a time and then sometime between 1870 and 1880, he moved to New Prague, Minnesota. He died there in 1889.
