Velma Justine (Gross) Slothower, 92, a resident of the Lutheran Home at Sprenkle Drive, died Sunday, June 2, 2013, at Memorial Hospital. She was the loving wife of Ralph L. Slothower. They observed their 71st wedding anniversary on July 26, 2012. Velma was born January 28, 1921, in Dover, a daughter of the late Gurney and Erma (Shaffer) Gross. She graduated from Dover High School in 1939. Velma worked as the office manager for Slothower Machine Shop. She previously was a cook at Dover High School and a telephone switchboard operator in Dover. Velma was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Dover. In addition to her husband, Velma is survived by two sons, Wayne M. Slothower and Stephen G. Slothower, both of Dover; six grandchildren; two step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Gurney Gross, Jr. and Carl H. Gross, both of Dover. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Velma's funeral at 1 p.m. and the visitation from noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church, 9 N. Main St., Dover. Burial will follow in Shiloh Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Kathy A. Swords, pastor of Shiloh Lutheran Church. Emig Funeral Home, Dover, is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Lutheran Church, 9 N. Main St., Dover, PA 17315.
