Gurney O. Gross, Jr., 86, of W. Manchester Twp., died Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at the York Hospital. He was the companion of Phyllis J. Ness.

Gurney was born on February 26, 1929, in Dover, son of the late Erma (Shaffer) and Gurney O. Gross, Sr.

He was a zoning officer for West Manchester Twp. for 10 years and Dover Twp. for 20 years. He was a 1947 graduate of Dover High School and a 1949 graduate of Thompson Business School.
He was a member of the Optimist Club of West York. He loved reading and listening to opera music.

The viewing will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. tomorrow at the John W. Keffer Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 2114 W. Market St., York. The funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Frank Miller officiating.

Gurney is also survived by his children, Lowell R. Gross and wife, Nina of Waynesboro, Va., Cheryl M. Noll and husband, Jon of Duncannon, Gayle Y. Rife and husband, Bill of York, Michelle E. Barnhart of York, and Neil C. Gross and companion, Gina Tarbert of Dover; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Carl Gross of Dover. He was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Slothower.
